What are Some “Proper” Meditation Techniques ?

I am often asked great questions by students about mindfulness that are beneficial to share with you here. This week I was asked “what are some ‘proper’ meditation techniques? Are some superior to others as some traditions and companies claim?”
A ‘proper’ meditation technique is one that has the three fundamental principals of meditative awareness.
Meditative awareness means paying attention in a certain way. This attention consists of these 3 basic elements…
1. Your attention is placed on purpose (meaning, your attention is where you consciously choose rather that lost in unconscious compulsive thinking). Usually when meditating you choose an object to place attention on, for example, following the sensation of the breath. You aim to stay steadfast with your attention on the object throughout the meditation and not ‘lose touch’ by slipping of into unconscious thoughts.
2. Your awareness and full attention is in the present moment (not dwelling in thoughts about past and future).
3. Your attention is non judgmental. Non judgmental awareness means we take the position of an impartial observer to thoughts and feelings as they arise. When meditating, we no longer take our thoughts very seriously or ‘buy into’ nor do we follow them. We simply allow them to come and go like clouds in the sky of our awareness. In this way, we begin to dis-associate with thoughts and are able to stay connected with the deeper awareness underneath thought, often referred to as ‘the watcher’.
You can meditate using any technique – as long as your attention has those 3 ingredients your are meditating. In my experience and observation there is no one technique or company that holds a secret or superior method.
When a student is taught to practice properly with meditative attention the meditation type does not really matter. In fact, once they learn this incredible skill their whole life can become a meditation. This is the marvellous art of mindful living and I recommend it highly as a wondrous way to live!
